“To fit in is to stand out” is a painting about one’s uniqueness and self-expression. When a person makes a resolution to bask in his or her true nature despite what others think or may not think then that person can fit in by standing out. I painted this piece when I was trying to find my own artistic language; I realized that with my unique African roots and life experiences, I had something different to offer the art world, that I could use art as a contemporary expression of culture. My subject is in his own world but yet a part of this world and he is different thus he adds diversity; he is not really bothered by others because he resolves to be himself. This painting is an extension of me.
